NRPUP LEADERS MOVE TO RESOLVE PARTY CRISIS
THE National Reconciliation Party for Unity and Prosperity (NRPUP) leadership has moved to address internal challenges that have unsettled the party, with consultations underway among structures across Lusaka.
NRPUP National Youth Chairperson Kelvin Kaunda said the developments within the party were unfortunate and required leaders to engage members and find solutions to the challenges.
He said the party was holding a consultative meeting with its structures across Lusaka to address concerns and questions arising from recent developments.
“First and foremost, I want to put it on record that the turn of events within our political party, the National Reconciliation Party for Unity and Prosperity (NRPUP), is quite unfortunate,” Mr Kaunda said.
He said members were concerned about the manner in which party affairs were being managed, arguing that leaders entrusted with responsibilities were expected to be inclusive and consultative.
He said NRPUP had adequate leadership capable of resolving the challenges, adding that the current situation would eventually be overcome.
“I have no doubt in my mind that our party has sufficient leadership to resolve the challenges we are facing,” he said.
Mr Kaunda also clarified the status of the party’s interim leadership, saying the founding leadership of a political party remained in charge until it was validated or confirmed by a congress.
“When a political party is formed, in accordance with the law, the founding leadership essentially constitutes the leadership of that party until it is validated or confirmed by a congress,” he said.
He further raised concern over the submission of the party’s proportional representation parliamentary candidate list to the Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ).
“We have also been informed by our interim party president Ezra Tembo that he is not aware of who presented the proportional representation parliamentary list to the Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ),” Mr Kaunda said.
He said the matter raised questions because the party president, or secretary-general in the president’s absence, was expected to submit the list.
“How did that list come to be submitted without the knowledge of the interim party president?” he asked.
Mr Kaunda said the matter was under investigation and members would be informed about the findings and way forward.
“We are treating this matter seriously,” he said.
