The passenger ferry Virgo Transport 8, carrying 243 people, capsized in the Java Sea on Sunday after encountering severe weather and rough seas while traveling from Surabaya to Banjarmasin.

Authorities have confirmed six deaths and rescued 108 people, while 129 others remain missing as search and rescue operations continue.

The vessel encountered waves reaching up to around three meters before it began to list and eventually overturned. More than 600 rescuers, along with naval and coast guard vessels, helicopters and other assets, have been deployed to search for survivors amid difficult sea conditions.
