Iran Condemns Alleged Attack on Iranian Commercial Vessel, Warns Ukraine of Consequences
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi has accused Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy of ordering an attack on an Iranian-owned commercial vessel, claiming the incident resulted in the death of one sailor and constituted a serious violation of international law.
In a strongly worded statement, Araghchi said the alleged strike was “a clear violation of the United Nations Charter” and claimed it had been carried out “at Israel’s direction” with the objective of drawing Europe deeper into the ongoing regional conflict.
The Iranian foreign minister further revealed that during separate conversations with European Union High Representative for Foreign Affairs Kaja Kallas and Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, he made Tehran’s position clear regarding the incident.
According to Araghchi, he informed both officials that the actions taken by the leadership in Kyiv “will not go unanswered,” signaling that Iran is considering a response to what it describes as a deliberate attack on its commercial shipping.
The remarks mark a significant escalation in Iran’s rhetoric toward Ukraine and come amid heightened regional tensions and growing international concerns over the widening scope of the conflict.
At the time of Araghchi’s statement, there was no immediate public response from the Ukrainian government regarding the allegations. Independent verification of Iran’s claims has also not been established.
