Iran has signaled that it is maintaining its restrictive policy toward the Strait of Hormuz, appearing to contradict U.S. President Donald Trump’s recent claims that progress had been made toward reopening the strategic waterway.
On Sunday, Fars News Agency, which is closely associated with Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), reported that Iran has no intention of fully reopening the Strait of Hormuz under current conditions. According to the report, no vessel will be permitted to transit the strait without authorization and coordination with Iranian naval authorities, indicating that Tehran’s existing maritime controls remain in place.
The report came just hours after Trump announced that he had called off a planned military strike against Iran, saying he wanted to give diplomacy another chance. Trump also claimed that discussions were moving toward an agreement that would lead to the immediate reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most strategically important energy shipping routes.
Iran’s latest position, as reflected in the Fars report, suggests no change in Tehran’s policy, casting doubt on expectations of a rapid easing of restrictions in the waterway.
