Iran Reinforces Low- to Medium-Altitude Air Defenses
Iran is reportedly moving to rebuild and strengthen its short-range air-defense network after suffering significant damage to its air-defense capabilities during recent fighting
Reports indicate that Tehran is seeking additional Chinese and Russian MANPADS, including the QW-12 and FN-16 from China and the 9K333 Verba from Russia. Recent reports say hundreds of shoulder-fired systems have been obtained or are being prepared for delivery, although the reported quantities and deployments have not been independently verified.
The systems are expected to strengthen protection against low-altitude threats such as drones, helicopters and other aircraft, with particular attention to military installations and strategic infrastructure.
Iran is also expected to disperse short-range air defenses around sensitive military sites and missile-related facilities, creating additional layers of protection against low-level attacks.
The move reflects Tehran’s attempt to close a critical vulnerability exposed during the conflict: protecting strategic sites from drones and low-altitude aircraft while preserving more advanced air-defense systems for higher-value threats.
