IRAN REPORTEDLY SEEKS TO KEEP OIL PRICES HIGH TO INCREASE POLITICAL PRESSURE ON TRUMP AHEAD OF U.S. MIDTERM ELECTIONS
Iran is reportedly shifting its strategy in the Strait of Hormuz, aiming not only to disrupt maritime traffic but also to keep global oil prices elevated and increase economic pressure on U.S. President Donald Trump ahead of the November midterm elections.
According to Reuters, citing two senior Iranian officials, the strategy was approved at the highest levels of Iran’s leadership approximately 10 days before the report.
The reported approach involves changing the frequency and methods of attacks on commercial vessels that Tehran believes are violating its maritime restrictions. Iranian operations are also reportedly expanding beyond the Strait of Hormuz into the Gulf of Oman and surrounding waters.
The wider maritime threat could increase shipping insurance premiums, disrupt global energy supplies and put additional upward pressure on oil prices.
WHY DOES THIS MATTER FOR TRUMP?
Higher oil prices can translate into more expensive gasoline and diesel, increasing transportation costs and adding pressure on American households and businesses. Rising energy costs could also become a political liability for Trump and his Republican allies ahead of the November midterm elections.
One Iranian official reportedly indicated that Tehran wants to prevent Trump from bringing oil prices down before Americans head to the polls.
If accurate, the strategy would represent an attempt to turn economic pressure into political leverage, using disruptions to global energy markets to increase the domestic costs of Washington’s confrontation with Tehran.
Iran cannot influence the U.S. ballot box directly, but developments in the global oil market could affect American voters’ views of the economy and the administration’s handling of the conflict.
⚠️ IMPORTANT: The alleged electoral objective is based on statements attributed to Iranian officials by Reuters. The extent to which Iran can sustain higher oil prices, and whether that would materially affect the election outcome, remains uncertain.
Could Iran use the global oil market to create political problems for Trump at home?
