Iran Signals Support for Ending Saudi-Houthi Hostilities
Iranian authorities have indicated that Tehran wants the conflict between Saudi Arabia and Yemen’s Houthi movement to come to an end.
According to Al Jazeera, Mohsen Rezaee, secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council, said he believes the Houthis do not want their confrontation with Saudi Arabia to continue indefinitely and are instead interested in reaching an agreement at the current stage.
The comments come as tensions surrounding Yemen and the Red Sea region remain closely linked to the wider regional security situation.
The Houthis have significant influence around the Bab al-Mandab Strait, one of the world’s most important maritime chokepoints connecting the Red Sea with the Gulf of Aden. Their position gives the movement leverage over a strategically important shipping route.
Saudi Arabia, meanwhile, has extensive military and economic capabilities but does not directly control the strategic maritime routes or much of the Yemeni territory that has been contested during the conflict.
Against this backdrop, any Saudi-Houthi negotiations could involve not only the future of the conflict in Yemen, but also border security, control of strategic territory, maritime security and access through the Bab al-Mandab.
Iran’s latest comments could therefore signal support for a renewed diplomatic track, although it remains unclear whether Riyadh and the Houthis are prepared to reach a comprehensive agreement.
