Iran’s military closes Strait of Hormuz again

Iran’s military says restrictions on the passage of ships through the Strait of Hormuz are being reimposed, alleging “repeated breaches of trust” by the United States in the two sides’ ceasefire.

On Friday, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi posted on X that the Strait was open to traffic, but within hours Iranian state media confirmed the “full supervision of Iranian armed forces over the passage of ships, and such passage is considered null and void if the alleged naval blockade continues.”

US President Donald Trump has insisted a naval blockade of Iranian ports will remain in place until a full agreement is reached with Tehran. It’s unclear when and where the two sides might meet again following the failure of a first round of talks in Islamabad last weekend.

An Iranian military spokesman said Tehran had allowed a “limited number of oil tankers and commercial ships” to pass through the Strait.

“But unfortunately, the Americans, with their repeated breaches of trust that are part of their track record, continue to engage in piracy and maritime theft under the so-called title of blockade,” the spokesman said, according to the semi-official Fars news agency.

Control of the Strait was again ”under the strict management and control of the armed forces,” until the US ends its blockade of ships leaving and destined for Iranian ports, he said.
