Today — April 18, 2026 — two Iranian Revolutionary Guard gunboats opened fire on commercial tankers attempting to transit the Strait of Hormuz, forcing vessels to turn back immediately.
The British military’s UK Maritime Trade Operations Centre confirmed the shooting reporting the tanker and crew as safe. But here is the detail that should send shockwaves around the world:
The VLCC Sanmar Herald a massive supertanker had already received prior clearance from Iran to pass through the strait.
They fired on it ANYWAY.
TankerTrackers.com confirmed multiple vessels, including an Indian-flagged supertanker, were forced to spin around and retreat after coming under Iranian gunfire.
Iran’s joint military command made their position clear:
“Control of the Strait of Hormuz has returned to its previous state under strict management and control of the armed forces.”
The strait will remain under Iranian military enforcement until the U.S. lifts its naval blockade of Iranian ports. And with President Donald Trump still deciding between in his own words “bombing them viciously or nicely” nobody knows what happens next.
