Israel May Already Be Regretting the Post-Assad Era
Turkey has announced plans to explore Syria’s oil and gas resources, including onshore and offshore fields and seismic surveys, while a new electricity transmission line is expected to increase Turkish electricity exports to Syria to nearly 900 megawatts.
The move comes days after Israel struck a Syrian air base, warning that it would not tolerate the presence of Turkish forces under the government of Ahmed al-Sharaa.
Under the former Assad government, Israel faced clear and established red lines in Syria. The post-Assad landscape, however, is creating a very different strategic environment, with Ankara gaining deeper economic, energy and potentially military influence inside Syria.
Israel’s recent strikes suggest that Jerusalem is already seeking to contain Turkey’s expanding role.
The regional balance is shifting rapidly—and Israel may be discovering that the post-Assad order presents challenges it did not anticipate.
