IT IS THOSE OF YOUR OWN PROFESSION WHO WILL HAVE A LOW OPINION OF YOU – CHIBAMBA KANYAMA

I went to the hospital for determination of my blood type and the doctor asked why I needed to know; told him I was motivated by a medical doctor on Facebook who encouraged followers to know their blood type that very week. ‘Oooh,’ the doctor cynically responded, ‘that one talks too much.!’ I was taken aback. Generally, it is those of your own profession who will have a low opinion of you, ‘What does he/she know?’

I told the Doctor how relevant this doctor was to many of us, that he was not stealing anything from us but adding to our wellbeing, and that life was more than knowing but being relevant in applicable situations: a husband will only be relevant to the wife when he expresses love; a farmer will only make profit by growing products the market needs; an economist is only relevant when he/she prescribes policies that take the economy out of doldrums!

Jesus pushed the issue of relevance to another level, that God does not entrust us with special gifts to just benefit ourselves, ‘But the one who does not know and does things deserving punishment will be beaten with few blows. From everyone who has been given much, much will be demanded; and from the one who has been entrusted with much, much more will be asked.’ Lk.12:48

Relevance is more than knowing; it involves going out of your way of knowledge: supporting society, solving problems people are facing, investing in people’s lives, being available when they want you and offering what you know in a practical and meaningful way, more so during these trying times! There are many people in Zambia with little wealth because they have given themselves to others. James says the following, ‘You believe that there is one God. You do well. Even the demons believe—and tremble! But do you want to know, O foolish man, that faith without works is dead?’ Jas 2:19-20

Have a pleasant long weekend, be relevant to your family and community; practice social-distancing and mourn with those that mourn. You all have something in you that someone around you needs knowing that we cannot have influence in the same area, ‘Do not withhold good from those to whom it is due, when it is in your power to act.’ Prov 3:27
