🟦 ITALY’S MICHELANGELO AIR-DEFENSE TECHNOLOGY WILL FACE ITS FIRST REAL TEST IN UKRAINE
Italian defense giant Leonardo plans to test the first operational component of its developing Michelangelo Dome air-and-missile defense architecture in Ukraine before the end of 2026.
The initial trial will reportedly focus on countering drones. Michelangelo is not one standalone launcher; it is intended to connect radars, command systems and different weapons across land, sea, air and space into one layered defensive network capable of responding to drones, missiles and other rapidly evolving threats.
Testing in Ukraine will provide invaluable information that cannot be reproduced during controlled exercises. Russian forces constantly change flight routes, electronic-warfare tactics, drone designs and attack combinations. Every real interception can expose weaknesses, improve sensor fusion and shorten the time between detection and engagement.
Ukraine could gain earlier access to emerging defensive technology, while Leonardo receives battlefield experience that will shape the platform before wider NATO trials planned for 2027 and full deployment later in the decade.
The company has also established a wholly owned subsidiary in Kyiv to pursue partnerships, investment and potential acquisitions within Ukraine’s defense industry. That makes this more than another foreign weapons trial. Ukraine is becoming a development partner whose engineers, combat experience and battlefield feedback will help define the next generation of European air defense.
Ukraine is no longer simply receiving finished Western systems. It is helping Europe build the systems it will need for the wars of the future.
