JAMES MUSONDA CHALLENGES UPND TO SPECIFY CONSTITUTIONAL AMENDMENTS SOUGHT

By Raphael Mulenga

Social Political Anthropologist
. James Musonda has challenged the UPND to clearly state what it specifically wants to change in the Constitution.

Reacting to remarks by UPND Deputy Chairperson for Legal Affairs Mulambo Haimbe that the UPND Government may pursue a wider constitutional reform in its new term, Dr. Musonda said while Zambia needs constitutional reforms, the process must not be used to serve the political interests of any particular party or to entrench leaders in power.

In an interview with Phoenix News, Dr. Musonda said constitutional changes should not be designed to achieve predetermined political goals and has warned against any attempts to remove presidential term limits or extend the tenure of office.

He further said the UPND must identify the specific lacunae or mischief it seeks to address, warning that constitutional reforms driven by narrow political demands risk further damaging Zambia’s democracy.
