EFF UNDER PRESSURE AS ELECTORAL SUPPORT DECLINES – ANALYST SAYS THE PARTY MUST RETHINK ITS STRATEGY!
The Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF), led by Julius Malema, are facing growing questions about their political future after early results from South Africa’s 2026 Local Government Elections showed a significant decline in the party’s electoral support.
Political analyst Dr Kuhle Zwakala believes the EFF needs to rethink its political strategy, refresh its image and introduce new messaging if it hopes to win back voters.
According to the reported results, with 54% of voting districts declared at the time of reporting, the EFF was polling at approximately 5.9% of the national vote.
This represents a worrying development when compared with the party’s previous local government election performances:
🔴 2016: 8.31% of the vote.
🔴 2021: 10.17% of the vote.
Dr Zwakala argues that the EFF has become predictable and is struggling to introduce fresh political ideas that appeal to an increasingly competitive electorate
He also believes the party missed an important opportunity by previously choosing to remain outside municipal governments rather than taking greater responsibility for governing and demonstrating its ability to implement its policies.
Another major issue raised by the analyst is the EFF’s position on immigration, which he believes the party may need to reconsider as immigration becomes an increasingly important issue among South African voters.
He further argues that the party’s election campaign has not matched the energy and political activism that previously made the EFF stand out.
With more than 50 political parties competing for voters, the EFF now faces a serious challenge: how does it convince South Africans that it remains a viable political alternative?
The big question is whether this is simply a temporary electoral setback or a sign that South Africans are beginning to lose confidence in the EFF’s political direction.
Do you think Julius Malema and the EFF can recover, or is the party losing its influence in South African politics?
