Prolonged Detention; Justice Ann-Mwewa Sitali Remains Detained
..over 300 members of the Opposition remain detained since August 2026…
Former Constitutional Court Judge Ann Mwa Sitali, remains detained weeks after she was police stormed her home, picked her and threw her at the Richard Kachingwe Police Post.
Authorities accused her of a charge of; “Conspiracy to Commit a Felony”, charges arising from lawyers seeking her professional advice on the Opposition electoral petition that was being prepared to challenge the re-election of President Hakainde Hichilema.
Others detained include Tonse-Pamodzi Alliance Secretary General Celestine Celestine Mambula Mukandila and youths Yona Longwe and Mwape.
The opposition members are detained at various police stations including Chelstone, Kabwata, Lusaka Central and Richard Kachingwe Police stations and posts.
The Human Rights Commission (HRC) says it is actively monitoring at least 84 individuals who remain detained following the August 13, 2026, general elections.
HRC Chairperson Dr. Pamela Towela Sambo stated that many of the 84 people have been held past legal limits without formal charges or timely court appearances, violating Articles 13 and 18 of the Zambian Constitution.
