KAFWAYA BLASTS UPND FOR DECOMMISSIONING RADIOTHERAPY MACHINES AT UTH WITHOUT PUBLIC NOTICE

Lusaka – Friday, November 8, 2024 (Smart Eagles)

Lunte Member of Parliament Hon Mutotwe Kafwaya has expressed disappointment with the UPND Government for decommissioning radiotherapy machines at Cancer Diseases Hospital at UTH without informing the nation.

Hon Kafwaya has expressed worry that doctors in other parts of the country keep referring patients to UTH without knowing that the machines at the country’s biggest referral hospital are not working.

Speaking at a press briefing at the National Assembly grounds today, Hon Kafwaya wondered how cancer patients will be treated without the radiotherapy equipment.

He states that instead of decommissioning all the radiotherapy machines at the same time, the UPND government should have decommissioned equipment in phases if they felt that the machines had become outdated.

“What this government has done shows that they do not care for the people of Zambia who are forced to spend resources such as money, time and energy to come to Lusaka for treatment from far flung areas only to discover that there are no radiotherapy services being offered at UTH,” Hon Kafwaya lamented.

Meanwhile, the Lunte lawmaker has charged that the governance of the fight against corruption under the UPND government has collapsed.
He notes that the Anti-Corruption –ACC Board was dissolved for revealing corruption within government, a situation that has rendered the corruption fight to become non-existent.

Hon Kafwaya says this is why the corruption within the current government is rotting thereby breeding serious irregularities in various sectors of governance such as the mining sector.

“This is why we have thieves within the UPND transporting truckloads of lithium out of the country but declaring it as silica at the border so that they can pay a paltry K18-million to ZRA instead of over K150-million,” he said.

Hon Kafwaya attributed this to the removal from border points all the Mineral Value Chain Monitors employed under the Ministry of Mines to assess the minerals going out of the country and replaced with ZRA officials who do not have the capacity to monitor minerals movements.

He has further bemoaned that there is nothing coming out from the people were caught for falsely declaring lithium as silica but the only thing the current government is concerned about is to harass the former First Lady for her properties worth less than K5-million.

Speaking at the same event, Chama North Member of Parliament Hon Yotam Mtayachalo has challenged the Ministry of Energy to come out in the open and tell the nation what is happening at ZESCO where confusion seems to be the order of the day.

Hon Mtayachalo says Zambians deserve to know why the corporation Managing Director Victor Mapani was rumoured to have been fired before he came and shortly announced his leave while a number of highly trained engineers are leaving the institution in unclear circumstances.

He says Zambians must also demand for answers as to why they are not being told the truth about the current load shedding which was predicted from as far back as 2022 but the UPND government failed to act on the recommendations to avoid it.

The two Parliamentarians have since commended all the Tonse Alliance members for endorsing the candidature of Sixth Republican President Edgar Chagwa Lungu for the 2026 presidential elections whom they say has the right experience after being tried and tested.
