KAMBWILI CALLS ON SPEAKER MUTTI TO STRIP CHABINGA OF LEADER OF OPPOSITION POST
By: Thomas Afroman Mwale
The Patriotic Front (PF) faction led by Given Lubinda has appealed to Speaker of the National Assembly Nelly Mutti to withdraw recognition of Mafinga Member of Parliament Robert Chabinga as Leader of the Opposition in Parliament following the Constitutional Court’s dismissal of a petition to declare the Matero Constituency seat vacant.
PF presidential hopeful Chishimba Kambwili said while the Speaker’s decision not to declare Miles Sampa’s seat vacant is commendable, she should equally remove Mr Chabinga from the position of Leader of the Opposition.
Mr Kambwili argued that Mr Chabinga was not elected by the party to hold the position and therefore lacks legitimacy adding that corrective action should be taken immediately Parliament resumes sittings.
Meanwhile, PF Acting President Given Lubinda has also praised Speaker Mutti’s decision, stating that for the first time in Zambia’s history, the Speaker made the right call by not declaring the Matero Constituency seat vacant.
