KEY SOLUTIONS TO OUR ECONOMIC CHALLENGES

The key immediate positive economic measure that Mr Hakainde Hichilema and his UPND government should take to address our economic challenges is revising the generous mining tax waivers given to transnational corporations.

Those in power should keep in mind that right now, the country is engulfed in political upheaval and is tense politically. Economically, our country is on its knees.

Aside from debt, the economic landscape is in the negative with high cost of living, which has a potential for civil unrest.

Prolonged load shedding is negatively affecting business. The transport costs should go down to reflect minor reductions in the fuel prices.

New external borrowing is increasing our foreign debt exposure and increases the probability for future default. Revamping of mines and increased copper production is a medium-term initiative and will not have an immediate impact on our economic challenges.

Our advice on the immediate positive economic measure is revising the generous mining tax waivers. We ask those in power to move on this immediately. We also ask those in power to immediately stop exporting electricity and prioritize the Zambian people.

We can make Zambia better!

  1. Awe sure kuwaya waya fye! For once, if you just set aside hatred, selfishness and politics, and just say things as they are, you may have a following. From the time you started, why can’t you pause and change course, because surely your party aren’t going anywhere. The question is why?

  3. Despite the man having PhDs, he is clearly ignorant about the matter he is talking about. For Mr Mmembe’s information, mines were the largest contributor to the taxes collected in the country for the year 2024, despite only makng up 11% of our economic activity. Now does he want the sector to be overtaxed so that it collapses like it almost did under PF? The problem with Mr Mmembe is that he still thinks he can manipulate and mislead people like he used to do in the past with his now defunct post newspapers but I have bad news for him, this time around people have got easy access to information and can make decisions based on facts they can obtain for themselves, unlike in the past when it was easy to deceive people since it was not easy to double check the information they got from the media.
