KING CHARLES RECEIVES ZELENSKYY AS BRITAIN TRIES TO REPAIR A BROKEN BRIDGE WITH WASHINGTON
President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has thanked King Charles III following an audience in Britain.
“It is important for me to be able to personally thank you for your unwavering support for Ukraine,” Zelenskyy said. “We appreciate all the help from the United Kingdom.”
The audience carries significance beyond ceremony. Donald Trump has repeatedly spoken warmly of King Charles, and the British monarchy has previously used royal diplomacy to preserve communication with Washington during periods of political tension.
That relationship could give Charles an opportunity to quietly reinforce Ukraine’s position and remind Trump why continued American support matters. Prime Minister Andy Burnham has also said he intends to “repair bridges” between Trump and Zelenskyy so that critical support can resume.
But Britain may discover that there was never much of a bridge to repair.
The tension has not developed because Zelenskyy refuses to compromise. Ukraine has paused strikes against Russian refineries, supported a genuine energy ceasefire and offered to organize elections if Russia accepts a 60-day total ceasefire.
Trump has responded by easing restrictions on Russian diesel, demanding that Ukraine stop attacking the infrastructure financing Russia’s war and publicly calling for a different Ukrainian president. Meanwhile, Russia continues bombing Ukrainian cities and power plants.
That is not simply a personality conflict or a failure of chemistry. It is a widening disagreement over whether Ukraine should be supported in resisting Russia or pressured into accepting Russia’s terms.
King Charles may be able to soften the conversation and help reopen communication. Britain can also use its influence to remind Washington that Zelenskyy is not the obstacle to peace.
The King may help reopen the door. He cannot make Trump walk through it.
