LABOUR EXPERTS QUESTION ‘ON THE SPOT’ RECRUITMENT OF VOLUNTEER NURSES BY PRESIDENT HICHILEMA

Labour experts have questioned the recruitment of volunteer nurses on the spot by President Hakainde Hichilema during his campaign rallies.
The President on Tuesday again announced the employment of volunteer nurses who attended his rally at Kamuchanga Grounds in Mufulira on the Copperbelt.
However, Health Workers Union of Zambia General Secretary Lewis Mukosha says although creating jobs is commendable, recruitment into the civil service should follow established procedures involving institutions such as the Civil Service Commission, the relevant ministry and other stakeholders.
Mr. Mukosha says while the announcement is good news for unemployed nurses, employing civil servants on the spot is not the correct procedure.
And Labour Relations Expert Albert Mando says appointments to the civil service are governed by laid-down guidelines which must be followed to ensure transparency and accountability.
Mr. Mando says failure to adhere to the prescribed recruitment process could raise audit queries and undermine established public service procedures.
