LITHUANIA INVITES THE UNITED STATES TO ESTABLISH A PERMANENT MILITARY BASE

Lithuania has formally opened the door to a permanent American military base on NATO’s eastern flank—and President Donald Trump says the United States will consider the proposal.

“We will certainly look at it,” Trump said when asked about Lithuania’s invitation. “I know so many people in Lithuania. They are great people.”

The response is not an approval, and no agreement has been announced. But it places the possibility of a permanent American base in Lithuania under consideration at the highest level of the U.S. government.

Lithuanian Prime Minister Mindaugas Sinkevičius previously said his country was prepared to cover the cost and provide the best possible conditions for American troops and infrastructure.

U.S. forces already deploy to Lithuania on rotating assignments. Since 2019, the American presence has generally included an armored battalion of approximately 1,000 troops supported by Abrams tanks, Bradley fighting vehicles and artillery. Two additional American battalions are expected to arrive later in October, although the nine-month rotational system will remain in place for now.

Lithuania’s proposal also comes at an uncertain moment for the American military presence in Europe. Washington is reviewing its force posture across the continent, with troops withdrawn or deployments reconsidered in several locations as the United States redirects resources toward other regions.

That makes Lithuania’s offer especially significant. While some European countries fear losing American forces, Vilnius is offering to finance the infrastructure needed to transform a temporary rotation into a permanent deployment.

A permanent base would carry far greater strategic weight. Lithuania borders both Russia’s heavily militarized Kaliningrad region and Belarus, while sitting beside the Suwałki corridor—the narrow land connection between the Baltic states and the rest of NATO territory.

Permanent American forces would strengthen deterrence, shorten reinforcement times and make clear that an attack against Lithuania would immediately involve U.S. troops already positioned on the ground.

Lithuania is not asking others to carry the burden alone. It has sharply increased defense spending, expanded military infrastructure and offered to finance the American presence itself.

The objective is not simply to preserve the troops already rotating through Lithuania. It is to anchor American military power permanently on one of NATO’s most exposed frontiers before broader reductions elsewhere can weaken deterrence.

For years, the Baltic states warned that Russia’s aggression would not necessarily stop with Ukraine. Lithuania is now seeking to ensure that if Moscow ever tests NATO’s eastern frontier, American forces will already be waiting there.
