London Mayor Sadiq Khan Says UK Should Enforce ICC Warrant if Netanyahu Visits Britain
London Mayor Sadiq Khan has said that if Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu were to travel to London, the United Kingdom should uphold its legal obligations under international law by enforcing the arrest warrant issued by the International Criminal Court (ICC).
Responding to a question about whether the UK should execute the ICC warrant if Netanyahu entered the country, Khan said he would urge the British Prime Minister to respect the rule of law and comply with the court’s decision. His remarks indicate that he believes the warrant should be enforced if the circumstances require it.
Khan also stated that “People accused of committing genocide are not welcomed in London,” adding that anyone facing such serious allegations should have their case examined through the judicial process. It is important to note that allegations of genocide against Israeli leaders remain contested and have not been determined by a final court judgment.
The comments come after the ICC issued arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant over alleged war crimes and crimes against humanity related to the conflict in Gaza. Israel rejects the ICC’s jurisdiction and strongly denies the allegations.
Khan’s remarks reflect his personal and political position as Mayor of London. However, authority over the enforcement of ICC arrest warrants rests with the UK national government and law enforcement authorities, not with the Mayor of London.
The statement also follows comments by Zohran Mamdani, the Mayor of New York City, who has likewise indicated that he would not welcome Netanyahu if he were to visit the city and has expressed support for respecting international legal processes. These remarks have fueled wider debate over international justice, diplomatic relations, and the implementation of ICC decisions.
