LUANGWA ACCIDENT: BUS DRIVER WAS EXCESSIVELY SPEEDING

POLICE say the driver of the bus belonging to Mwekache, which overturned in Luangwa this morning, leaving nine passengers with serious injuries, was excessively speeding at the time of the accident.

Police spokesperson Rae Hamoonga says the accident happened at 06:00 hours along the Great East Road at junction D145 (Feira) Road when Justine Miti, 35, of plot 5859 Chimwemwe Compound of Chipata, Eastern Province, failed to control the Higer Bus, registration number BAL 9887, which overturned and had its front part and right side of the body damaged.

“On board were nine passengers comprising of six female adults, two male adults and one male child who sustained serious injuries. Five females, two males and one male juvenile have been admitted to Katondwe Mission Hospital of Luangwa District whilst one female Adult is at Mpanshya Mission Hospital in Rufunsa District.

“The accident occurred when the driver who was approaching from the direction of West to East, lost control of the vehicle due to excessive speed and went into a ditch before overturning. The driver has been detained in police custody,” Mr. Hamoonga said.
