LUKASHENKO QUESTIONS WHY THE U.S. WENT TO WAR WITH IRAN
Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko has questioned the reasons behind the United States’ war with Iran, arguing that Iran’s history, resources and strategic importance provide greater context for the conflict than the explanations publicly given by Washington.
Lukashenko said Iranians have historically refused to “kneel before anyone,” pointing to the 1970s and the seizure and damage of the U.S. Embassy in Tehran by Iranian protesters.
He compared the episode with the enormous Soviet losses during World War II, noting that despite nearly 30 million Soviet deaths, the Soviet Union did not later launch another war against Germany simply because of the destruction and suffering caused during the conflict.
Lukashenko argued that the United States ultimately chose to go to war with Iran and said the embassy incident was not the real reason for the conflict.
He instead claimed that Iran’s natural resources and wealth are the underlying reasons behind the war, though that characterization represents Lukashenko’s assessment rather than an independently established explanation for the conflict.
