BRIEFING | Lusaka Archdiocese calls solidarity Mass ahead of Archbishop Banda’s DEC appearance
The Catholic Archdiocese of Lusaka has called a solidarity Mass for Archbishop Alick Banda on Monday, ahead of his expected appearance before the Drug Enforcement Commission (DEC).
The Archdiocese says the Mass will begin at 08:00 at the Cathedral of the Child Jesus at Pope Square, before Archbishop Banda proceeds to DEC offices at 10:00. DEC is yet to confirm the summons and has indicated it will issue a statement on the matter.
“Our Archbishop is not alone. He remains a shepherd surrounded by his flock, and the Church stands firmly with him in prayer, communion, and solidarity,” the Archdiocese said.
It called on clergy, religious leaders and the Catholic faithful to remain “united in prayer, calm in spirit, and steadfast” as the Archbishop responds to the summons.
Archbishop Banda was summoned by DEC earlier this year in connection with investigations involving a motor vehicle linked to the Zambia Revenue Authority that was among vehicles being investigated for alleged illegal disposal.
It is not yet clear whether Monday’s expected appearance relates to the same investigation.
“At this moment, we are called not to fear, but to remain vigilant in prayer and steadfast in our commitment to truth, justice, and peace,” the Archdiocese said.
