LUSAKA MONEY LENDER SUES AMOS CHANDA OVER K3 MILLION DEBT

By Nelson Zulu

A Lusaka money lender, Bruce Choongo, has sued former State House press aide Amos Chanda over a K3 million debt.

In a statement of claim filed in the Lusaka High Court, Mr. Choongo submits that Mr. Chanda borrowed K3 million from him on January 16, 2026, under an agreement requiring the amount to be repaid within one month together with 20 percent interest amounting to K600, 000.

Mr. Choongo claims that after Mr. Chanda failed to honour the initial agreement, the two parties entered into a subsequent agreement on February 16, 2026, under which Mr. Chanda undertook to settle K3.9 million by march 2, 2026.

He further claims that on March 1, 2026, Mr. Chanda issued a commitment letter rescheduling repayment to March 4, 2026, and undertaking to pay K4.08 million, but allegedly failed to honour the commitment, leading to another variation on March 26, 2026, under which he agreed to settle K4.13 million by March 30.

Mr. Choongo said as a gesture of goodwill, he later agreed on May 4, 2026, to accept K3.2 million as full and final settlement, to be paid in instalments, but Mr. Chanda only paid K200,000, leaving an outstanding balance of K3 million and that Chanda later, through his lawyers requested six weeks to settle the outstanding amount, but failed to do so.

The plaintiff says despite a demand letter issued through his lawyers on July 8, 2026, and repeated written and oral reminders, Mr. Chanda has failed, refused or neglected to settle the debt.

Mr. Choongo is now seeking payment of the K3 million outstanding balance, interest, exemplary damages and costs of the action.
