Maamba Solar Project Injects 100MW Into Zambia’s National Grid
Zambia has taken another step towards diversifying its electricity generation mix after the 100MW Maamba Solar PV Project began injecting power into the national grid.
The project, developed by Maamba Solar Energy Limited (MSEL), entered its commissioning phase after electricity was first injected into the national grid on September 24, 2026
The project is located in Maamba, Sinazongwe District, Southern Province, alongside the existing Maamba thermal power operations.
MSEL is a joint venture in which ZCCM Investments Holdings Plc holds a 35 percent equity stake, while Nava Global PTE Limited, the international arm of India-listed Nava Limited, holds the remaining 65 percent.
The utility-scale solar facility represents an investment of approximately US$90 million and has a 20-year Power Purchase Agreement with ZESCO Limited.
The plant uses bifacial photovoltaic modules mounted on single-axis trackers designed to follow the sun during the day and maximise electricity generation. It also includes a dedicated 330kV substation and grid-interconnection infrastructure.
ZCCM-IH Chief Executive Officer Kakenenwa Muyangwa said the first injection of power comes at an important time as Zambia seeks to strengthen energy security and diversify its electricity generation sources
He said the project would contribute to reducing reliance on a single source of electricity generation while strengthening resilience in the national grid.
The commissioning process will include testing and verification of the solar generation system, tracking systems, inverters, medium-voltage collection network, 330kV substation, protection and control systems, metering, SCADA and communication systems, as well as grid-interconnection facilities.
The project will subsequently undergo synchronisation, reliability and performance testing before proceeding to full commercial operations.
The Maamba Solar Project adds 100MW of solar generation capacity to Zambia’s electricity system and forms part of efforts to expand renewable energy generation and diversify the country’s energy mix.
