MACKY SALL CAME BACK TO SENEGAL TO ASK FOR SUPPORT AND THE BETRAYAL IS COMPLETE
Former President Macky Sall visited Dakar on Friday to formally request Senegal’s backing for his UN Secretary-General bid. It was his first return since leaving office in April 2024. He now lives in Morocco. He met President Bassirou Diomaye Faye, briefed him on his campaign, and pledged to keep him updated. The presidency called the meeting a symbol of the continuity of the state.
This is the same Macky Sall whose government concealed over $13 billion in debt. The same man whose administration understated the budget deficit as 4.9 percent when it was actually 12.3 percent. The same man whose Court of Auditors found embezzlement, forged documents, and illicit enrichment. The same man whose ministers are being indicted for misappropriating pandemic relief funds. The same man whose repression killed over 67 people during protests.
He should be behind bars. Instead, he is being received at the presidential palace.
Faye and Sonko came to power on a promise to break from Sall’s legacy. They campaigned on accountability and transparency. They vowed to end the impunity of the old regime. They uncovered the debt. They exposed the corruption. They promised justice.
Now Faye has welcomed Sall with open arms. He is asking his party to back the man who bankrupted the country. He is aligning himself with the person he was elected to replace.
This is a betrayal.
The split with Sonko is now complete. Sonko was fired as Prime Minister. He is now the parliamentary speaker. He controls the majority. He is the one who called debt restructuring a disgrace. He is the one who stood for sovereignty. Faye is the one who shook hands with the man who stole from Senegal.
Faye is desperate. He has lost his alliance with Sonko. He is looking for new allies. He has found one in the man whose legacy he once promised to end.
The people are watching. The families of the dead are watching. The youth who voted for change are watching.
What was the point of the revolution if the revolutionaries become friends with the ones they overthrew?
