MACRON: THE RUSSIAN DIESEL DEAL IS “GOOD FOR NOBODY”

French President Emmanuel Macron has delivered a blunt assessment of Washington’s agreement involving Russian diesel: it is inappropriate, ineffective and unlikely to meaningfully reduce fuel prices.

“Above all, I think the decision that was taken is good for nobody,” Macron said. “It sends a negative signal and creates division or doubt.”

Macron acknowledged that governments must bring down the cost of diesel, gasoline and gas—but argued that reopening the door to Russian fuel is not the answer.

“It creates mistrust,” he said. “This is not what will bring them down effectively. It is not the right response.”

His warning reaches beyond fuel prices. Europe has spent years trying to reduce its dependence on Russian energy and deprive Moscow of revenue that can sustain its war. A separate American arrangement with Russia now risks dividing allies, weakening that pressure and giving the Kremlin another financial opening

The agreement was presented as a way to provide relief at the pump. Macron’s message is that it may accomplish neither goal: prices may remain high while Russia receives the political and economic victory.
