🇿🇲 BRIEFING | Mafinga South MP Faith Munthali arrested over alleged armed group

Mafinga South Member of Parliament Faith Munthali has been arrested and charged with being armed in public and conspiracy to commit a felony over allegations involving a group of men who allegedly operated as her security personnel in Mafinga District.

Muchinga Province Police Commissioner Lubinda Mayamba says the alleged offences occurred between July 13 and August 14, 2026, in the Muyombe area.

Police allege Munthali was accompanied by men who conducted themselves in a “military-like manner” while carrying machetes, slashers, catapults and golf clubs, causing fear and alarm among members of the public.

Munthali has been jointly charged with Gift Simfukwe, Misheck Singongo and Royd Musumali. The three co-accused have already appeared before the Isoka Resident Magistrate’s Court and taken plea, according to police.

Their trial is scheduled to begin on Thursday, September 17. Munthali remains in police custody and is expected to appear before court in due course.

Mayamba has cautioned political and community leaders against organising or participating in activities capable of threatening public order or undermining community security.

The charges remain allegations and will now be tested before the courts. Police have not established Munthali’s guilt by announcing the charges, and the prosecution will be required to prove its case against the MP and her co-accused.
