Trump-aligned billionaires Larry Ellison and his son David have secured a takeover of Warner Bros. Discovery, the parent company of CNN, and are now positioned to reshape one of America’s most recognized news networks in MAGA’s image.
Paramount Skydance, the Ellison-controlled media company, outlasted Netflix in a fierce bidding war for the media giant after sweetening its offer and David Ellison made a very public show of loyalty by attending Trump’s State of the Union address as the personal guest of MAGA Senator Lindsey Graham.
The Warner Bros. Discovery board formally determined that Paramount Skydance’s $31-per-share bid was the superior offer, surpassing Netflix’s competing proposal, which had only sought the company’s streaming arm and film studio operations.
Netflix officially walked away, stating the deal no longer made financial sense. With the acquisition now moving forward, Paramount Skydance will take control of CNN, HBO, CBS, and a massive portfolio of other media properties.
Perhaps most alarming to journalists and media watchers is what comes next for CNN. The network is widely expected to fall under the editorial control of Bari Weiss, the MAGA-friendly commentator who already runs CBS News and has sparked internal revolt there.
Anderson Cooper recently departed 60 Minutes to focus exclusively on CNN, meaning he will soon find himself working under the same leadership he has spent years pushing back against.
Larry Ellison, one of the wealthiest and most politically connected figures in Silicon Valley, had previously attempted a $108 billion takeover that was rejected. He returned with his son’s hostile bid, going directly to shareholders and ultimately winning full control of the entire conglomerate. Trump, who has spent years publicly attacking CNN and demanding it be sold, is now watching his allies take the keys.
The free press is under siege, and this deal is the clearest proof yet that MAGA money is buying up the institutions that are supposed to hold power accountable.
