Within hours, the comments under his Truth Social post filled with a wave of open Islamophobia. Supporter after supporter demanded “no Muslims in office,” questioned Hassan’s loyalty, and told the president he had betrayed them simply because of the candidate’s faith. One follower asked Trump if he had “lost his mind.” Another declared it a “hard no” and insisted there should be no Muslims in America at all.
It didn’t matter that Hassan’s own campaign literature says Jesus Christ is his Lord and Savior. The mob had already decided that a name and a religion were enough to disqualify him.
What Trump exposed, without meaning to, is the raw bigotry he spent years feeding. He built this movement on grievance and fear, and the moment he stepped one inch outside the script, it turned on him.
Amir Hassan didn’t ask for any of this. He put his name forward to serve the people of his district, the same right every American is guaranteed no matter how they pray.
