MANHUNT IN HARARE AS LEAKED AUDIO AND TREASON CHARGES DRIVE CLERIC BATSIRAI JAVA INTO HIDING

In the dead of night last month, while Harare slept under a restless sky, heavily armed detectives from the Law and Order section moved out. Five unmarked vehicles tore through the capital with a single, urgent objective: track down and seize preacher Batsirai Java. Weeks after that pre-dawn dragnet, the charismatic leader of the Tabernacle of Grace Church remains a fugitive, thrust into the crosshairs of a ruthless political machine determined to crush him.
The charge sheet read like a death sentence: State versus Batsirai Java. Four lethal counts, including publishing falsehoods prejudicial to the State, bigotry, undermining the authority of the President, and treason – an offence that carries life imprisonment. Directed by Chief Superintendent Edmore Runganga, the state’s security apparatus is waging a relentless hunt for a man of God whose words have rocked the nation’s political bedrock.
The catalyst for this state-sponsored storm was a explosive 33-minute audio recording that detonated across social media networks. Investigators insist the recording was a deliberate weapon designed to incite a military uprising against President Emmerson Mnangagwa. On the tape, a voice striking in its similarity to Java’s exposes a shadowy web of state capture orchestrated by billionaire tycoon and ZANU PF Central Committee member Kudakwashe Tagwirei, known in political corridors as Queen Bee.
The speaker paints a chilling picture of an shadow government. Tagwirei is portrayed as the master puppeteer: dictating cabinet appointments, pulling the strings of the judiciary, and wielding absolute control over the Zimbabwe National Army and prison services. “I am the next president,” Tagwirei is quoted as declaring, bragging of twice-weekly private audiences with Mnangagwa.
More dangerously, the audio ties Tagwirei directly to the contentious Constitution of Zimbabwe Amendment Number 3 Act (CAB3), signed into law by Mnangagwa. The law stretches presidential terms from five to seven years and replaces direct popular voting with election by a joint sitting of Parliament. It is a calculated constitutional coup securing Mnangagwa’s grip on power until 2030, while systematically freezing out Vice President Constantino Chiwenga.
When the state struck, it struck hard. Nine officers from the Criminal Investigation Department descended on church properties in Ruwa and Tynwald before storming Java’s home at 11 Cynthia Road in Mount Pleasant. They broke down doors, seized computer drives, and hauled away Java’s senior aide and personal secretary. The cleric’s younger brother, Pastor Simba, was subjected to hours of intense interrogation in a dark police room.
“They raided his home, they raided the house of God, and now they are picking up people around him because they cannot find him,” voiced one senior pastor, speaking under thick anonymity. “Where is the crime? This is a satanic agenda. It is a sustained campaign to silence a man of God who refuses to bow to the political whims of the day.”
The fallout has shattered the Java family, exposing a deeply bitter political divide. Batsirai Java is the widower of Vimbai Tsvangirai Java, daughter of the late opposition titan Morgan Tsvangirai. His brother, Passion Java, is an flamboyant, staunch cheerleader for President Mnangagwa.
From his base in the United States, Passion Java scrambled to sever ties with the expanding scandal. “I distance myself 100 percent from all that is being said in the audios,” Passion declared frantically. “There are audios circulating in Zimbabwe mentioning names of the President and central committee member Kudakwashe Tagwirei, fellow prophets, politicians and Members of Parliament. Of course Java is my blood brother. I am not sure it is him; it is AI-generated. Me and Apostle Java, remember, he is a great man of God, anointed, and nothing changes his calling from God. We are just different in our political positions. Remember, he was married to a Tsvangirai, and then I stand now with Mnangagwa. I never had any meeting with Tagwirei or any conversation with him. I do not even know some of the names dropped in the audio.”
Before vanishing into the night, Batsirai Java released one desperate, cryptic denial: “I just want to clarify and categorically say I am not the person in that audio. This is my voice. This is me speaking.” He admitted the voice was identical to his own, but vehemently denied uttering the treasonous words.
Fueling the fires behind the scenes is a toxic, long-running war with Uebert Angel, founder of Spirit Embassy and presidential envoy. In 2024, Java’s aide Nigel Dutiro filed a criminal complaint at Harare Central Police Station under docket RRB 141472, alleging Angel had hired South African assassins to liquidate Java. Though the case stalled, intelligence sources whisper that Angel is now leaning heavily on state prosecutors to ensure Java is permanently neutralised.
The regime’s net is widening. Across the country, independent churches face unprecedented terror. In Mudzi district, ruling party operatives reportedly forced pastors to lock their doors on Sunday mornings, forcing terrified congregants into political rallies.
As state police secretly alert Interpol that Java may have slipped across international borders, a suffocating silence hangs over Harare. Inside the Tabernacle of Grace, church pews remain packed with trembling believers. The hymns have quieted; the prayers are now desperate whispers for the life of their hunted prophet, caught in the gears of a dangerous game of succession.
