MARKETEERS WARNED AGAINST SUBLETTING MARKET STANDS

Lusaka Mayor-elect Chitambala Mwewa has warned marketeers against subletting council-owned market stands, saying those who fail to personally occupy their allocated spaces risk losing them.

Mr Mwewa alleged that 98 percent of marketeers sublet their spaces at higher fees while conducting street vending, contributing to congestion on the streets.

He cited Susan Manje, who allegedly pays K300 to the council for stand 364 at SMLM Market but sublets it for K1,000.

“Our people take advantage of the loopholes and they flood the streets,” Mr Mwewa said.

He warned that “people like Susan Manje who sublet their spaces risk losing their stands.”
