By Julius Phiri

FORMER Botswana president Mokgweetsi Eric Keabetswe Masisi has been appointed to lead the International Conference on the Great Lakes Region (ICGLR) Election Observation Mission to Zambia ahead of Thursday’s General Election.

Dr Masisi, who served as Botswana’s fifth president, will lead the international observer mission tasked with observing the electoral process during the August 13, 2026 General Election.

According to a statement issued by the Office of the former President in Gaborone yesterday, the appointment reflects the confidence and trust placed in Dr Masisi by the ICGLR Executive Secretariat and its member states.

The statement said the appointment also recognised his advocacy for democratic governance, constitutionalism and the rule of law across Africa.

“Former President, His Excellency Dr Mokgweetsi E. K. Masisi attaches great importance to the promotion of credible, transparent, peaceful, and inclusive electoral processes,” the statement said.

Dr Masisi is expected to work closely with the ICGLR Secretariat, local stakeholders and other election observer missions during his stay in Zambia.

The mission is expected to contribute to the observation of Zambia’s electoral process and support efforts towards a peaceful and credible election.

Dr Masisi is scheduled to depart Gaborone for Lusaka today and return to Botswana on August 16.
