MAZABUKA’S CHIZOBO WARD ELECTION NULLIFIED
The Local Government Elections Tribunal has nullified the election of UPND Chizobo Ward Councillor Ashios Hangoma in Magoye Constituency of Mazabuka District.
Byta FM’s Court Beat journalist reports that this is in a matter where independent candidate Morven Hamwenda petitioned the election of UPND’s Ashios Hangoma as Chizobo Ward Councillor.
Hangoma was declared winner of the Chizobo Ward local government elections after going unopposed, on the basis that the only other contender, Morven Hamwenda, had withdrawn.
Delivering a three-hour judgment, Chairperson of the Tribunal on Local Government Elections sitting in Mazabuka, Resident Magistrate Alice Walusiku, declared Hangoma’s election null and void, stating that he was not duly elected in accordance with the law.
She stated that the Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ) failed to substantially comply with electoral laws relating to councillors.
The Tribunal further declined to award compensation and damages to Hamwenda due to lack of evidence in the form of receipts.
She further ordered that each party bear its own costs.
