MID-AIR DRAMA: PASSENGER TRIED TO OPEN PLANE DOOR — THEN DIED BEFORE LANDING
A Kenya Airways flight from Nairobi to Lagos turned into a frightening scene on Tuesday night after a male passenger reportedly became aggressive and attempted to gain access to restricted areas of the aircraft.
According to Nigeria’s Civil Aviation Authority, the passenger had reportedly been denied entry into Madagascar and was being returned because Kenya Airways had transported him there.
During the flight to Lagos, he allegedly became restless and aggressive.
Passengers say the situation escalated when the man tried to get into the cockpit. He later reportedly moved toward the rear of the aircraft and attempted to open the door while the plane was still airborne.
That immediately caused panic inside the cabin.
Passengers and crew members rushed to restrain him. According to accounts from people who said they were on the flight, some passengers helped hold him down while crew members used restraints to prevent him from causing further trouble.
One passenger reportedly said the man had been saying he wanted to see the pilot and, if he could not, he would open the door.
The situation was eventually brought under control, and the man was restrained with his hands behind his back.
But the incident took a tragic turn.
Kenya Airways says that at around 9:20 p.m. Nigerian time, approximately 20 minutes before landing, the passenger became unresponsive.
The cabin crew reportedly administered first aid and followed emergency procedures, including attempts to revive him.
The aircraft landed at Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos at about 9:41 p.m.
Medical personnel were already waiting at the airport.
After examining the passenger, they confirmed that he had died.
Kenya Airways has not publicly identified the man or disclosed his age, nationality or medical condition.
The airline has described the incident as a medical emergency and said it is supporting the deceased’s family while cooperating with local authorities and aviation regulators.
Meanwhile, the Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority says police have taken over the investigation..
Authorities will now have to establish exactly what happened inside the aircraft, what caused the passenger to become aggressive, and what led to his death.
An autopsy may also be requested by the family as investigations continue.
For the passengers who witnessed the incident, what started as an ordinary Nairobi-to-Lagos flight ended with a terrifying confrontation in the cabin — followed by the death of one of the passengers just minutes before landing.
⚠️ Important: Claims about exactly what happened during the confrontation are based partly on passenger accounts and videos circulating online. Kenya Airways’ official statement confirms the medical emergency and death but does not independently confirm every detail of the alleged attempt to open the aircraft door.
What do you think should happen when a passenger becomes this aggressive on a flight?
