Mpundu’s sureties summoned after former MP fails to appear in court
The Lusaka Magistrates’ Court has summoned the two sureties for former Nkana Member of Parliament Binwell Mpundu to explain his whereabouts after he failed to appear for a ruling in his ongoing seditious practices case.
Lusaka, 20 August – Mr Mpundu was expected to appear before Magistrate Webster Milumbe on Thursday for a ruling on whether he has a case to answer in the matter.
However, the former lawmaker was absent from court when proceedings were due to begin.
The defence informed the court that attempts to contact Mr Mpundu had been unsuccessful, leaving his whereabouts unknown.
Following the development, Magistrate Milumbe ordered the two sureties to appear before the court on September 17, 2026, to explain why the accused had failed to attend court and to provide information regarding his whereabouts.
The State has meanwhile warned that it could seek a bench warrant should Mr Mpundu fail to appear at the next sitting.
The case will therefore return to court on September 17, when the sureties are expected to account for the former MP’s absence and assist the court in determining the next course of action.
