Mukandila urges national healing, unity after elections

TONSE – PAMODZI Alliance Secretary General Celestine Mukandila has called for calm, constitutionalism and national healing in the aftermath of what he described as one of the most consequential elections in Zambia’s history.

Mukandila said in a statement that the country stood at a crossroads and urged political leaders and citizens to reject the vitriol that marked the campaign period.

He said the country witnessed one of the most rigorous and consequential elections in in the nation’s history.

” Regardless of our political affiliations, Zambia must remain a united, multiparty, indivisible and unitary democratic state that upholds constitutional order, the rule of law and democratic values,” he said.

The Secretary General said his experience on the campaign trail revealed an urgent need to reflect on political conduct.

He also condemned what he called baseless accusations and personal attacks among citizens.

“There have been numerous baseless accusations, inflammatory statements and unacceptable actions against participants in these elections. Such conduct must never become the standard of our political discourse,” he said.

Mukandila said he has always advocated for a political culture founded on the competition of ideas, policies and visions for the country and not one characterised by slander, malice, personal attacks and intimidation.

He further reminded President Hakainde Hichilema that power derives from citizens and must be exercised within constitutional limits.

“To the Government and those entrusted with the responsibility of governing our nation, I wish to remind you that political power is vested in you by the people and that mandate must always be exercised within the confines of our Constitution and in the best interests of the Zambian people,” Mukandila added.
