Mundubile launches Zambia’s first “crowdfund the commander-in-chief” campaign
In what political observers are jokingly calling the country’s boldest experiment in “democracy by mobile money,” National Reconstruction Party for United Progress (NRPUP) presidential candidate Brian Mundubile has turned to ordinary Zambians for financial backup, inviting supporters to help bankroll his presidential ambitions one voluntary donation at a time.
LUSAKA, 1 August – Posting on his official Facebook page, Mr Mundubile urged citizens to visit his campaign platform and contribute whatever they could afford, describing his presidential bid as a “people-driven” movement.
“Fellow Zambians, I invite you to visit our campaign support platform and make a voluntary contribution. This is truly a people-driven campaign,” the message read.
Supporters were also directed to the campaign’s official website, where they can donate toward what could become Zambia’s most publicly sponsored political adventure.
The fundraising appeal has sparked light-hearted reactions online, with some joking that campaign strategy meetings may soon include budget items such as “fuel for the campaign vehicle,” “microphone batteries,” and “one more loudspeaker if donations exceed expectations.”
Others quipped that if enough people contribute, voters might finally be able to say they didn’t just elect a president, they helped buy the campaign banners too.
The move reflects a growing trend of politicians embracing online fundraising as election season gathers momentum. While many candidates rely on wealthy backers and party financiers, Mr Mundubile appears to be betting that thousands of small contributions can add up to one very expensive dream.
Whether the donations pour in or merely trickle remains to be seen, but one thing is certain: in this campaign, every kwacha has officially been promoted from spare change to a potential vote of confidence.
