…over prolonged detention and rights violations at Mukobeko

POLITICIAN Brian Mundubile, his running mate Makebi Zulu, and 16 other co-accused have filed a constitutional petition in the Lusaka High Court.
The petitioners are challenging their ongoing detention at the Mukobeko Maximum Correctional Facility, labeling it unlawful, unconstitutional and a severe breach of their fundamental human rights.
The 18 petitioners have named Attorney General Mulilo Kabesha, alongside Harrington Akushanga and Fredrick Chilukutu, as respondents.
The suspects argued that their transfer and admission to a maximum-security prison without proper judicial authorisation violated their legal rights, noting they have also been restricted from accessing legal counsel and family.
The legal action follows the August 13 election where incumbent President Hakainde Hichilema defeated Mr Mundubile.
Following a deadly security raid on August 14, Misters Mundubile and Zulu surrendered to police on August 27 and faced non-bailable treason charges.
After being moved to Kabwe on August 30, the duo faced additional sedition charges related to social media posts concerning election data and announcements.
