Musumali Says “No Condition Is Permanent” as He Warns Against Repeating Zambia’s Political History
Socialist Party General Secretary Dr Cosmas Musumali has argued that Zambia’s political history demonstrates that the use of arrests, restrictions and state machinery against political opponents does not permanently secure political power.
Dr Musumali cited the experiences of previous administrations under UNIP, MMD and PF, arguing that each government eventually lost power despite employing measures that, in his view, restricted political opposition.
He further raised concerns over the detention of opposition figures, arrests of supporters, the closure of courts, the cancellation of passports and the circumstances surrounding the death of former minister and Lunte MP Hon. Mutotwe Kafwaya. He called for transparency, accountability and respect for the rule of law
Dr Musumali also argued that the UPND government should learn from its own history as an opposition party and avoid repeating measures that it previously criticised when they were used against its leaders and supporters.
He concluded by stressing that political power is temporary and that governments should be mindful of history, arguing that the lessons of Zambia’s past should guide the country towards greater respect for democratic institutions, human rights and the rule of law.
