MUZALA POCKETS OVER K95,000 AFTER DEFENDING PRESTIGIOUS HUNGARIAN TITLE

Zambian sprint sensation Muzala Samukonga has once again proved why he remains one of the world’s elite 400m runners after successfully defending his Gyulai István Memorial Hungarian Athletics Grand Prix title in Budapest, Hungary.

Samukonga stormed to victory in 44.02 seconds on 14 July 2026, improving on the 44.11 seconds he ran to win the same competition in 2025.

The achievement not only saw the Olympic bronze medallist become a back-to-back champion, but also earned him the first-place prize of US$3,500 (approximately K95,000 to K100,000).

The US$3,500 is exclusive of any appearance fees often paid to elite athletes, performance bonuses, and sponsorship incentives, meaning the total amount Muzala could earn from the event is likely to be significantly higher.

The Gyulai István Memorial is one of the world’s most prestigious one-day athletics meetings and forms part of the World Athletics Continental Tour Gold, the highest tier of competition outside the Diamond League. Every year, the event attracts Olympic champions, world champions and some of the fastest athletes on the planet.

By defending his title, Samukonga not only walked away with the winner’s cheque but also secured valuable World Athletics Ranking points, strengthening his position ahead of upcoming major international championships.

The Zambian star continues to raise the country’s flag on the global stage, proving that he belongs among the very best in world athletics.
