NAKACINDA’S RELEASE: A NEW CHAPTER FOR THE TONSE ALLIANCE AND THE REBIRTH OF PF

By Chisala Kasonde Leonard

The release of Hon. Raphael Mangani Nakacinda from prison presents a significant moment for opposition politics in Zambia. His return comes at a time when the opposition needs more than strong voices; it needs unity, organisation, strategic leadership and a renewed sense of purpose. His experience, political connections and former position as Patriotic Front (PF) Secretary-General could make him an important figure in rebuilding the opposition landscape.

Nakacinda’s immediate responsibility should be to help bring the Tonse Alliance together. Political differences, personal ambitions and leadership disagreements must not be allowed to weaken a movement that should offer Zambians a credible alternative. The Alliance needs dialogue among its leaders, respect for one another and a shared understanding of what it hopes to achieve for the country. Unity is not about agreeing on everything; it is about finding common ground where the future of Zambia matters more than individual interests.

Equally important is the rebuilding of party structures, from the ward level to the national leadership. A strong political movement cannot depend entirely on popular figures or occasional public statements. It needs active members, functioning offices, effective communication and leaders who understand the concerns of ordinary citizens. Nakacinda should help ensure that the Alliance becomes a movement rooted in communities rather than one existing mainly among political leaders.

There is also the question of the anticipated rebirth of the Patriotic Front. Having once served as PF Secretary-General, Nakacinda carries an image associated with the party’s organisational history and political experience. His return could become part of a wider effort to rebuild confidence among PF members and supporters who still believe in the party’s future. Whether the PF emerges renewed will depend on its ability to resolve internal differences, strengthen its structures and reconnect with the people. Nakacinda could help bridge the gap between the PF’s past and a more organised opposition future, while encouraging cooperation with other forces within the Tonse Alliance.

Beyond Zambia’s borders, the Alliance should also pursue constructive relationships with international democratic institutions, human-rights organisations and partners who support constitutional governance. Such engagement must be based on credible evidence, mutual respect and a genuine commitment to democratic principles.

At home, the opposition must strengthen its role in providing checks and balances. It should question government decisions, demand transparency in public spending and defend constitutional freedoms. However, the Alliance must practise these same principles internally through accountability, consultation and respect for democratic procedures.

Nakacinda’s experience should also remind him that political courage must be accompanied by discipline, sound legal advice and responsible communication.

Ultimately, his greatest contribution may not be in the number of political statements he makes, but in the people he brings together and the structures he helps rebuild. His release offers an opportunity to turn past struggles into renewed purpose.

The challenge before Nakacinda is clear: help unite the Tonse Alliance, contribute to the rebirth of the PF and strengthen an opposition capable of holding power accountable while earning the trust of Zambians.

  1. Muhabi Lungu purports to be Tonse Alliance Secretary General, a post Nakacinda held before imprisonment. So, expect wrangles from day one not what you are talking about.
