NATO Conducts Major Air Operation Near Russia’s Kaliningrad Enclave
NATO has reportedly conducted an unprecedented air-power deployment near Russia’s heavily militarized Kaliningrad enclave, in a major demonstration of allied capabilities amid rising tensions with Moscow.
The large-scale operation reportedly involved between 25 and 50 allied aircraft operating over Poland and the Baltic states.
The deployment included F-35 fifth-generation fighter jets, aerial refueling tankers and AWACS airborne early-warning and control aircraft, providing NATO with a combination of airpower, surveillance, command-and-control and logistical support.
For the first time, the operation also reportedly involved two highly specialized U.S. Air Force electronic-warfare aircraft, designed to disrupt enemy communications, radar systems and other electromagnetic capabilities.
Conducting electronic-warfare activities near Kaliningrad, one of Russia’s most heavily militarized territories, sends a powerful strategic message. The exercise demonstrates NATO’s ability to rapidly concentrate a large and technologically advanced air force along its eastern flank while testing its capacity to operate in an environment protected by sophisticated Russian air-defense and electronic-warfare systems.
The operation comes as NATO continues to strengthen its eastern defenses and prepare for potential high-intensity conflict on Europe’s eastern flank.
