Netanyahu Criticizes Britain and France Over Colonialism Accusations
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has criticized Britain and France over what he described as accusations of colonialism directed at Israel.
Netanyahu reportedly argued that it was striking for the two European powers to accuse Israel—a relatively small country—of colonialism, while both Britain and France historically maintained vast colonial empires that extended across large parts of the world.
“Britain and France are accusing us of colonialism, even though we are a small country, while their colonialism extended across the entire world,” Netanyahu said.
His remarks come amid broader international criticism of Israel’s policies toward the Palestinians and the ongoing conflict in Gaza, as well as renewed debate over Israel’s historical origins, territorial claims and relations with European countries.
Britain and France were among the major European colonial powers during the 19th and 20th centuries, controlling territories across Africa, Asia and the Middle East. Israel, meanwhile, rejects the characterization of its establishment and policies as a form of colonialism and argues that its historical and national connection to the region predates the modern colonial era.
Netanyahu’s comments reflect the continuing diplomatic tensions between Israel and several Western governments over the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and the future of the region.
