NGOCC CONCERNED OVER LOW WOMEN REPRESENTATION IN PARLIAMENT AFTER AUGUST 13 POLLS

The Non-Governmental Gender Organizations’ Coordinating Council -NGOCC- says women representation in the national assembly remains below 20 percent after the August 13 general election.
NGOCC Executive Director Anne Anamela said only about 31 women out of the initial 122 who were nominated have made it to parliament.
She however notes that with additional women nominated under the mixed member proportional representation system, overall representation will still be less than 20 percent.
Ms. Anamela has described the low numbers as a setback to Zambia’s vision 2030, which targets at least 30 percent women participation in politics.
She has since called for legislation that will compel political parties to field more women candidates in future elections.
