NGONI CHIEF TO BE “BURRIED” WHILE  SEATED

The remains of Ntabeni Jere, Chief Chindi IV of the Ngoni people of Malawi, have drawn attention to the rich cultural traditions of the Ngoni community, particularly their distinctive royal burial customs.

The Malawian Ngonis have preserved an age-old tradition of using a special casket for their chiefs, reflecting the cultural heritage and customs passed down through generations.

According to Ngoni tradition, chiefs are buried in a seated position, a practice that distinguishes royal burials within the community and carries deep cultural significance.
Chief Chindi IV is expected to be laid to rest on Wednesday.

However, in keeping with their cultural beliefs, the Ngoni people use the term “planting” rather than “burying” when referring to the final resting of their chiefs.

The tradition highlights the importance of preserving cultural identity, honouring traditional leadership and maintaining customs that connect present generations to their ancestors.
