‎
‎The Bravest Goalkeeper in Zambian Football
‎
‎If you love Zambian football, you have heard the name “Nkafwa Nayo”.  A Goalkeeper who died on the pitch holding the ball.

‎
‎Back in the 1940s and 50s, when Zambia was still Northern Rhodesia, we always played Congo (DRC). And we always lost badly, 12-0, 9-0, 10-1. It was embarrassing.

‎
‎Why? Our goalkeepers were scared. There were stories of Congolese juju. When a Congolese striker shot, the Zambian goalkeeper would see a lion running at him, or knives flying, or a big train coming into the goal. He would jump away, and the ball would go in.

‎
‎Then came one brave goalkeeper from Luanshya called “Yotham Mabange”.
‎
‎Before a big game in Congo, they warned him: “This time they will use strong magic on you. You will see things.”

‎
‎Mabange answered in Bemba: “Teti ine nkafwa nayo bola mu minwe”
‎
‎Meaning *”I will die with the ball in my hands.”*.

‎
‎He meant: even if I see a lion, I will not run. I will catch that ball.
‎
‎And he did. He stood firm. He caught the lions, the knives, the trains. For the first time, Zambia only lost 2-1 and 1-0, not 12-0. Congolese players were shocked.

‎
‎From that brave sentence, he got the nickname (Nkafwanayo) — The One Who Dies With The Ball.
‎
‎He did not die on the pitch. He lived, but his courage lived forever. He taught Zambia that fear is what beats you, not the opponent.

‎
‎That is why today when we see a goalkeeper make a brave save — like Kennedy Mweene, Efford Chabala, or James Phiri — we say he has the spirit of (Nkafwa Nayo)
