North Korea Claims to Have Tested AI-Powered Missile Designed to Evade Air Defenses

North Korea has claimed it successfully tested an intermediate-range strategic missile on Saturday, October 3, allegedly equipped with artificial intelligence (AI) technology that allows it to adjust its flight path at low altitudes, making it more difficult to track and intercept.

The announcement was made by Kim Yo Jong, the sister of North Korean leader Kim Jong Un and one of the country’s most influential political figures. It came hours after South Korea’s military detected a ballistic missile launch toward waters off the Korean Peninsula’s eastern coast.

According to Kim Yo Jong, the missile can perform in-flight maneuvers that could complicate the response of enemy air-defense systems. She also attributed to her brother the claim that no other country would have access to comparable technology for several years.

However, North Korean authorities have not explained precisely how artificial intelligence is used in the missile or provided publicly available evidence to independently verify its claimed capabilities.

State media reported that Kim Jong Un personally supervised the test, describing the weapon as part of a strategic hypersonic missile system. The term strategic suggests a potential role in nuclear deterrence, but it does not establish that the missile carried a nuclear warhead during the test.

The reported development could have implications for the United States and its regional allies, particularly South Korea and Japan, where Washington maintains defense commitments and military forces.

A missile capable of making unpredictable mid-flight maneuvers could pose additional challenges for missile-defense systems. However, its actual effectiveness and the role of AI in its guidance and control remain unverified.

The announcement also serves a political purpose, as Pyongyang seeks to portray its military arsenal as increasingly sophisticated and difficult to neutralize.
